Gandhi's failure to secure commutation of Bhagat Singh's execution has provided his critics a convenient weapon to attack him. He has been accused of making half-hearted effort and even deception - for the alleged discrepancy between his actual role and his public statements. This paper attempts to establish that while following a consistent approach towards revolutionary violence, Gandhi tried his best to save the lives of Bhagat Singh and his collegues till the last moment. The paper also discusses Gandhi's strategy to focus on suspension rather than commutation of the death sentence.

Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju's blog post, which condemns Mahatma Gandhi as "an agent of the British who did great harm to India" has shocked citizens. His belief is defied by the fact that thousands research Bapu's life story to this day.

Katju recently dismissed Satyagraha as "reactionary nonsense" and said Bapu helped the British by eulogizing Hinduism and alienating Muslims.

At Grant Road, the Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal, which sells books by and about the Mahatma, finds that people worldwide nurture an abiding faith in him. Each year on his death anniversary, Sarvodaya offers Gandhi literature at half the cover price. Last year, books worth more than Rs 5.5 lakh sold within six days.

Narayan Desai, noted Gandhian and Bapu's kathakar, dies at 90 


Narayan Desai, 90, one of the tallest Gandhians in the country and son of Mahadev Desai, Mahatma Gandhi's personal secretary, died at his house in Vedchi village in Tapi district on Sunday, March 15, 2015 after a brief illness.

Born on December 24, 1924, in Valsad, Narayanbhai was brought up in Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Ashram and Sevagram near Wardha. Gandhiji fondly called him 'Bablo' and he was the last of many Gandhians alive who had lived with Bapu and had experienced his personal care.

The 'Gandhi kathakar' died of cerebrovascular and respiratory failure between 1.30am and 4.30am. He died at his residence which he called the Sampurna Kranti Vidyalaya.

A galaxy of political leaders led by British Prime Minister David Cameron and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley were joined by Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan and the Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi at the ceremony to unveil the 9-foot (2.7m) bronze statue of India's Father of the Nation

A historic bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Parliament Square, Britain, standing adjacent to iconic leaders like Britain's war-time Prime Minister Winston Churchill and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela.

A galaxy of political leaders led by British Prime Minister David Cameron and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley were joined by Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan and the Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi at the ceremony to unveil the 9-foot statue of India's Father of the Nation.

Gandhi is the first Indian and the only person never to have been in a public office to be honoured with a statue at the Square.

Academicians from around the world who converged at Johannesburg to mark the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi's return to India from South Africa have called for adhering to Gandhian principles for promoting interreligious dialogue.

A two-day international conference in commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi's return to India after initiating his passive resistance plans in South Africa, where seeds of his 'Satyagraha' were sown, was held over the weekend where various speakers from India, the US and Africa were in attendance.

The much-awaited Mahatma Gandhi's bronze statue at Britain's historic Parliament Square, London will be unveiled on March 14, Prime Minister David Cameron announced. The announcement came as the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust surpassed the one-million pound mark in donations, with steel tycoon Lakshmi N Mittal adding 100,000 pounds and the Infosys Board chaired by K V Kamath 250,000 pounds in the last few weeks.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is expected to be the special guest at the ceremony to install the statue, which will be the last one to up in the square alongside South African anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela and Britain's war-time Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
"The statue in Parliament Square not only marks his huge importance in the history of both our countries, but will enrich the firm bond of friendship between the world’s oldest democracy and its largest," Cameron said in a statement.

About 7,400 Gandhian Books worth Rs. 3.7 lakhs sold within a week

Week-long exhibition-cum-sale of Gandhi Books organized by Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal to commemorate 67th Gandhi death anniversary

In the present world, full of modern technologies like i-phones, tabs and e-books, it is difficult to believe that many people still interested in buying Gandhi books. But a week-long exhibition-cum-sale of Gandhi Books proves that Gandhiji's teachings are relevant than ever.

About 7,400 Gandhi-Vinoba-Sarvodaya books (in English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati) worth about Rs. 3.7 lakhs were sold within seven days at the books exhibition. It was organized by Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal and Gandhi Book Centre with the financial assistance from Babulnath Mandir Charities’ and ‘Mahalaxmi Mandir Charities’ at Hutatma Chowk and Gandhi Book Centre at Nana Chowk from 27th January to 3rd February to commemorate 67th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
