Relevance of Gandhi's views on Economic Development

Relevance of Gandhi's views on Economic Development
By Gulabhai Jani
Translated into English by Alaka Sharma

The world economic order is in “crisis mode”. Well-known companies and banks of USA are declaring themselves as bankrupt, one by one. It is feared that the economy may slide down to the days of “Great Depression”. In this context, it is worthwhile to have a look at the economic thoughts of M. K. Gandhi.
Gandhiji’s economic thought is imbibed in his overall philosophy. His approach is holistic and aims at the socio-economic reconstruction of society. Once, Gandhiji was asked to write down the text of his economic thought, he refused, saying that his framework is based on some basic principles which he applies to solve the day to day practical problems. So it can’t be summarized in a few equations.

- Donation Ticket @ Rs. 10,000/-

Few know that 2002 was not the first time communal riots ravaged Godhra. Even fewer know that the riots in the 1930s were witnessed by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who then wrote extensively on the subject. This and other revelations about Bapu form the crux of the play, OMG — The Lesser Known Side of Gandhi, which will be staged at the Taj Mahal Palace on Friday, 27.04.2012 as part of a fundraising project to aid the Tata Medical Centre (TMC).

82nd commemoration of Dandi March and the spirit of peace and non-violence

82nd commemoration of Dandi March and the spirit of peace and non-violence

April 6,2012 is yet another red-letter day in the history of India, when the nation witnessed the re-enactment of historic Dandi March by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi 82 years ago to protest the British rule for taxing natural salt. It was on this day in 1930, Gandhiji had started the historic march from Sabarmati Ashram with 78 volunteers for Dandi, a village on the sea cost in Gujarat. The 25-day march through dusty and muddy tracks culminated on April 6, 1930. As the march continued, people saw the changing history of the world. It was the whole of India rising up with rekindled enthusiasm and faith.
